SBW 26′ Navigating care: exploring connection with Pasifika tāngata whai ora and whānau
Online
- May 12, 2026 9:30 am - 11:00 am
Event Description
Pasifika communities continue to experience inequities across mental health and addiction services, including higher rates of seclusion and restrictive practices, and ongoing barriers to accessing culturally safe care. Many Pasifika also continue to engage with mainstream services over culturally specific supports, prompting important conversations about accessibility, trust, awareness and choice.
Grounded in community perspectives, this session will explore how Pasifika tāngata whai ora and whānau navigate care, reflect on what is working well and where gaps remain, and examine how mainstream services can better partner with Pasifika providers and communities. We’ll also discuss common challenges and opportunities for non-Pasifika kaimahi.
This forum will include presentations from:
- Maliaga Erick – Clinical Pacific Advisor, Whāraurau
- Siosinita Alofi – Pacific Clinical Advisor, Whāraurau
- Angeline Hekau – General Manager, Penina Trust
- Moka Pleydell – Support Worker, Pathways New Zealand
And will be facilitated by the wonderful Pakilau Manase Lua, Ringa Huti Punga | Pasifika Equity Lead, Wise Group.
This hui will create a supportive space for kaimahi to strengthen confidence and understanding when working alongside Pasifika tāngata whai ora and their whānau. Through practical kōrero and shared reflection, participants will explore how to engage in more culturally responsive and relational ways, with a focus on building trust, strengthening communication and creating meaningful connections.
